SkyView holds up during SnF power outage

As most of you know by now, we just had the worst weather ever experienced at SnF. First it was some nasty rain, then the sky got very very dark, power went out and "all hail" poured down, then the worst thing for an airport, the wind, I'm sure it hit 100 miles per hour but haven't heard the official report yet.

At hanger 'A' we Dynonians were working away when it hit. The sounds were incredible and it felt like the whole hanger was going to give. The hanger held and so did SkyView, our IFR demo panel equipped with the backup battery, was going strong. It was probably the only EFIS at the entire show that is still operational (even now) through the outage. It made me feel good since we spend the whole show telling people that the SkyView backup battery will keep the system going if power is lost in flight. Usually real life is the best way to prove yourself...

Even now as I write this (at 1:30), power is still out and we are waiting out the storm. I worry about those who were not protected as well in the hanger.

Dynon Announces Limited Edition DX15 Handheld Aviation Radio

As our first entry into aviation communications, Dynon is offering a limited edition hand-held radio.  We created 100 compact aviation band transceivers as part of our plans to eventually supplement the versatile SkyView Glass Panel System with a panel mounted radio. We created the DX15 hand-held transceiver to learn about radio design, FCC Part 87 certification, and radio production.

These 100 handheld radios are restricted to usage in the United States and are being offered to U.S. pilots through a unique auction. To participate, bidders must visit www.DynonAvionics.com/radio and place a bid. A typical retail price for equivalent radios would be about $250, but bids will be accepted starting as low as $75. Participants can only bid once, for up to two units. Shipping in the U.S. is free.

The top legitimate bids for 100 hand-helds will be accepted. The price for all of them will be the lowest bid of the top 100.  Bids will be accepted between March 29th and April 27th.

If you are at Sun-n-Fun, please come see us. We have a few of these radios in the booth.

SkyView 3.0 is Out!

SkyView 3.0 is Released. You may go to our Website and read about the changes, download the software, and purchase SV-MAP-270 if you wish.

The new features include:
  1. SV-MAP-270.
  2. Worldwide Jeppsen NavData and Obstacles.
  3. Large HSI display.
  4. A G-Meter!
  5. New Ethernet connection for synchronizing data uploads.
  6. See the release notes for a complete list.

A few things to consider:
  1. If you have more than one display, you should add an Ethernet connection between your displays (not absolutely required, but it will allow you to upload databases to only one display, and have it automatically synchronize to the other display.) An aircraft grade Ethernet cable can be purchased from Dynon.
  2. You can purchase SV-MAP-270 immediately, or try it out with a 30 flight hour free trial.
  3. Jeppesen NavData and Obstacle data is now available worldwide.

SkyView 3.0… the final build…

It is Thursday night and I just loaded the official SkyView 3.0 software onto the test unit on my desk. The final build is here, it is another exciting step for SkyView and the Dynon-nation. I’m finding that I’m addicted to just pushing buttons to play with the new map user interface and view the new data that is now displayed. The excitement resonating from our customers is evident too. Customers all over the world are clamoring to get navigation mapping for the first time with the addition of worldwide Jeppesen data. Our USA customers, who have been enjoying the free trial version of the map, can now expect a heck-of-a lot more map features and an elegant presentation, all on a nice big 10” screen.

Unfortunately, multi-leg flight planning didn’t make the date, but we have carved out a special release for that within weeks, not months, from now to ensure you are not kept waiting too long. There is also a clever g-meter we are anxious to hear feedback on. Our aerobatic beta testers sure liked it, and we think others will too.

But the highlight of my week (next to holding the final build in my hand) was hearing about a phone call we got from one of these excited customers that I referred to above. It went something like this: “Are you guys going to release 3.0 today?... because if you are, I'm going to take the day off from work and go fly my SkyView system”. Unfortunately, we had to send him to work for at least another week (I think he was able to cope with that). But that kind of energy is what we at Dynon love to hear; it makes our job fun. I am pumped about SkyView 3.0 and look forward to talking to users about it at the upcoming air shows.

So if any of you need to schedule some time to “work” on your airplane, you should probably carve out this coming Monday and give 3.0 a ride!

Hope to see many of you at SUN ‘n FUN

Sincerely,

-Nick
